Your puppy's first night home: a calm hour-by-hour plan
The first night is new for everyone. Your puppy has just left everything familiar, so a little crying is normal. A simple, boring routine helps more than anything fancy.
Before your puppy comes home
- Crate or pen ready in your bedroom, with soft bedding. Being close to you helps your puppy feel more secure.1
- Something that smells like home. Ask the breeder or shelter for a blanket or toy that smells like the litter.1
- Pick a potty spot outside and use the same one every time.
- Decide the bedtime now. The exact hour doesn't matter much, it just needs to become a routine.1
The evening, step by step
- EARLY EVENINGDinner at the time your breeder or shelter recommends, then a potty break at your chosen spot. Praise calmly when they go.
- 2–3 HOURS BEFORE BEDGentle play. Many puppies get a burst of energy in the evening; using it up now makes settling easier later.1
- 1 HOUR BEFORE BEDWind down: dim the lights, offer a chew, keep visitors and noise low.
- RIGHT BEFORE BEDOne last potty break. Quiet, no play, praise when they go.1
- BEDTIMEGuide your puppy into the crate and give a small treat when they go in willingly.1 Lights off.
If your puppy cries in the night
Some puppies sleep through from the start, others cry for a few nights, and some can't hold it yet and need one trip outside.1
- Reassure without a party. With the crate right next to your bed, you can rest your fingers near the crate so they know you're there.1
- Whining after a few hours? It may be a potty need. Carry your puppy out quietly, keep it short and boring, then straight back to the crate.1
- Only bring them into your bed if that's where you want them to sleep long-term.1
The night-time trips usually stop on their own as your puppy grows; AKC notes this typically ends by around 4–5 months.1 If you're worried about anything health-related, ask your vet.
The first morning
Go straight outside to the potty spot as soon as your puppy wakes up, praise, then breakfast. Repeat the same order tomorrow. Puppies learn fastest when every day looks alike.
